Enjoying the College Atmosphere
Need a break from homework or grading papers? Get out and enjoy what the community has to offer to Western.
Third Thursday, which happens monthly, has been developed by the Student Government Association. This event takes place in downtown St. Joseph and allows students and staff to get discounts at various businesses.
Freshman Erin Cox went to her first Third Thursday in February.
“I actually have only gone to the Open Mic Night, and I’m big fan of poetry, and it’s nice to hear local poetry,” Cox said.
Open Mic Night takes place at Mokaska Coffee Company to allow students under 21 to enjoy the event, as well.
Evan Banks is Western’s assistant director of external relations and has been pleased with how well Third Thursdays have been going.
“The community of businesses downtown has embraced it so willingly,” Banks said. “They understand the mission and the importance of connecting the two entities. When these businesses schedule programming to give university students opportunities to engage in a vibrant culture, it gives me hope that St. Joe and Missouri Western can develop into something greater.”
The goal of Third Thursday is to create and maintain a mutual bond between the community and the students and staff at Western.
According to Banks, Third Thursday may develop into something that the surrounding area lacks.
“More students, staff and faculty are hearing about the program and coming down every month,” Banks said. “Likewise, more businesses are expressing interest in becoming a part of it, and Downtown Firsts has demonstrated that they value the initiative so much that they have been willing to lend a hand promoting, funding and brainstorming the program.”
If you have cabin fever from being stuck at home, come out and enjoy Third Thursday.
