One of the web design requirements for the college class was to create a portfolio website. The class needed to create a website to sell themselves in the job market. To help complete the class assignment, the class was required to complete the certifications for HTML, CSS, and JavaScript in Codeacademy.

Kalee Black is completing this class in her final year at Missouri Western State University. Black’s website was published and is ready for the website to continue to evolve as she does in her career in strategic communication. After the website was launched, it is a good idea to have successful individuals in the related field to give advice on how to improve or what the individual liked about the website.

During the Society for Collegiate Journalists Career Fair 2020, Black was able to talk to individuals about her website and social media for The Griffon and The Griffon News which will ultimately improve her portfolio content.

One of the individuals that attended was Anthony Crane, Sports Editor for Maryville Forum, he was there to answer any questions the students had. Crane looked over the portfolio website and gave constructive criticism. He suggested making the examples of the portfolio examples bigger to decrease the amount of blank space.

After Black discussed with Crane, she visited Dave Ledden, Eagle Radio Senior Account Executive. Ledden praised Black on her website being clean and not wording. He did give her a personal tip about following many famous individuals in her field of study.

During the discussion, Ledden asked Black if she considered the sales aspect of Radio. Black admitted she has not, but is open to the idea and more information. Ledden gave Black his contact information in case she needed more information or needed anything else.

Following Ledden, Black visited Dave Hon, Digital Editor for the News-Press Now. Hon gave constructive criticism by informing Black to move the portfolio content to the front page and create a PDF of her résumé. Also, Hon described how to construct the Facebook post to try to beat the algorithm by using native picture or original copies of photos.

The last person Black talked to was Matt Stooks, Program Director for Eagle Radio. Black and Stooks talked mostly about content for post. Then Stooks viewed Black’s website.

Stook informed Black it is not necessary to use the lead for the sentence to be used in Facebook post. He said to pick out the most interesting sentence and try to create a voice. Also, he suggested to link national holidays with organization related things, like the example Black showed him on her VIP Mary Kay page.

Stooks was impressed that one person is in charge of so many media accounts. For his company, there are several employees that handle social media accounts.

Stooks looked at Black’s portfolio website on his phone, and he liked how it worked on a phone. Also, Black asked what he thought about fishing and hunting pictures on her hobbies page, and he thought it would be alright not to sensor it that much. He recommended not having that many tabs to decrease the amount of clicking.

During the career fair, Black received great information about her portfolio website and improvements she could make on the media accounts she handles.
